Jesuit Academy Students Celebrate Black History Month

3/8/2013

Students at Jesuit Academy recently celebrated Black History Month with a special assembly titled “Our Life, Our Culture, Our History.” Family and friends of our young men filled the school commons area to watch as students presented artwork, read inspirational speeches and gave informative presentations on people and events relating to Black History.  Sixth grade teacher Mike Mansour also premiered the ninth installment of the student made “Lost In Time” video series.

Guests were welcomed by eighth grader Jy’ion Berry and led in prayer by fellow eighth grade student Jaylen Smith.    Principal Troy Wharton then gave a brief presentation on why Black History is important, followed by a scripture reading, from Berry.

The program began with the fourth graders – who were dressed in their school uniforms and a mix of bow and traditional neck ties – giving autobiographical presentations on African American Heroes they personally chose, followed by the fifth grade performance of the readers’ theater script “Sojourner Truth:  A Life Devoted to Justice.”  The seventh graders then set the stage for their poster board presentation of various African American figures in history, where students showcased their hand-made posters and read portions of the essay they wrote as a part of their class project.  The eighth graders focused their presentation on great African American athletes, sharing PowerPoint slides they created, containing autobiographical and career information, notable quotes and statistics.  And last but not least, guests were wowed by the sixth grade class video “Lost in Time IX:  Black Characters in Comics.”
