Jesuit Academy 7th graders took part in a Mock Trial on Wednesday, March 7 at the Creighton University Law School. The young men worked with Creighton University Law students, Lindsey Bitzes and Christine Gault, over several weeks to learn about various aspects of the law and prepare for the trial. During the first sessions, students focused on the Constitution and Bill of Rights. As the trial neared, students learned about direct and cross-examinations, opening and closing statements, and even where to stand when presenting to the jury or questioning a witness. The trial focused on 4th amendment rights, which protect citizens against illegal searches and seizures. Each student presented a piece of the trial for the plaintiff or defense, or played the role of a witness at the trial. The jury, made up of Jesuit staff and students' parents, decided the verdict. Both sides presented strong arguments, but the jury ruled in favor of the plaintiff who charged that his 4th amendment rights had been violated. You can see the entire trial in the clips below.
